The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
Listening Therapy

Have you struggled with Anxiety? Difficulty in Regulating Your Emotions?
Experiencing Meltdowns or Sensory overload?

How can SSP Help You?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) may be helpful in reducing symptoms and supporting overall health and resiliency for people seeking support for:
  • Trauma history

  • Depression and Anxiety

  • Autism, Hyperactivity and Attention

  • Chronic pain

  • Chronic health conditions

  • Sensory and Auditory processing and more

What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol is a 5 Hour auditory intervention created by Dr. Stephen Porges to reduce stress and enhance social engagement, resilience and emotional regulation.

The SSP involves listening to music that has been processed specifically to retune the nervous system to introduce a sense of safety and the ability to socially engage.

As a practical application of Polyvagal Theory, SSP allows better interpretation of speech, but also the emotional meaning of language. Spontaneous social behaviour, reduced social anxiety, and enhanced ability to learn & self-regulate & engage are often seen.

What to Expect From Your SSP Experience

How We Would Work Together

  • Initial Assesment: An assessment session with the individual or their parent/carers to ascertain background information and current concerns. Here I also share information on how the protocol works, understanding nervous system and state changes and tips on how to best self and co-regulate.
  • Initial session: We then begin some listening session clients listen to the first section of the SSP during this session, whilst I observe for and manage reactions to the music.  The first section may be a matter of minutes up to 30 mins (rarely) depending on the individual’s reaction to the music and history. From my observations, I then recommend the best way to progress with listening for the following day and we keep in daily contact for remainder of the protocol for the client to share responses which helps me advise accordingly.
  • Regular check ins: These regular check ins will offer support throughout the programme and can differ in length according to what will be most helpful. Daily contact can be a combination of face to face, video call, phone or email and will be discussed during the initial consultation and first listening session.
  • Final session: To complete ending assessments and signpost for ongoing support.
  • Three month follow up: This meeting can also advise on continued use of the SSP as clinically indicated.
  • SSP license: 12 months access to the Unyte Health SSP app can be made available.
